Swat engineer claims to produce electricity with water
While the country witnesses its worst energy crisis, a 37-year-old self-taught mechanical engineer from Swat claims to have a solution.
After 20 years of research, Rehan Aziz Farooqi, has invented a unique power generator that runs solely on water, and, wait for it, the design can be used to allow any engine that runs on petrol, diesel or green gas to use water as fuel.

She was selected for the UNESCO-L’Oreal Fellowship This is highly prestigious award which is designed to identify and reward fifteen committed and talented young scientists, from all over the world and allowed her to work in University of Cambridge, UK. She has been selected for this award from around the world.
She attended the 60thNoble Laureates Meeting Lindau, Germany, June 2010.
Each of the selected candidates belongs to the budding scientific elite of their respective countries, and has passed a multi-stage international selection procedure.
The Council workgroup then makes its final selection from this pool of Best Talents, examining 1,500 profiles for every Meeting before finally choosing the top applicants to receive an invitation to Lindau. The Lindau Meetings contribute to the establishment of international networks of scientific excellence.
She was selected for the Robert Bosch Stiftung Fellow, Germany, 16 July,
2010. Knowledge dissemination, targeted youth training and support for international
networking in science gathering for excellent young scientists from around the world.
IGNITE entrepreneurship Programme, Judge Buisness School, University of Cambridge, UK, June 2011. She has selected for the EPSRC, UK from a pool of 15 thousands candidates IGNITE fellowship.
Einstein Young Scholar Award, Germany, 8 Nov, 2010. She was chosen by the
Einstein Foundation Berlin as one of the young scientists from the UK to participate
as an ‘Einstein Young Scholar’ in the 2010 Falling Walls Science Conference on Future Breakthroughs in Science and Society.

Ricksaaf: For those hard to reach places in Karachi, a rickshaw that wants your trash
KARACHI: The rick-saaf is a combination of a rickshaw and a garbage truck that can collect waste from those hard to reach places where the onus is generally left to the scavenger.
“There used to be a time when we used to have daily door-to-door garbage collection where I live,” says entrepreneur Khayam Husain, “now we don’t even have a proper dumpster in my neighborhood. The closest one in Clifton Block 5 is on Mai Kolachi.”
Husain’s own neighborhood and his work in Sindh’s flooded areas with the Karachi Relief Trust inspired him to find solutions for waste management. “A lot of our urban centres in Sindh are actually just slums because of the waste management system. I wanted to design a vehicle that could get into small areas.”
The prototype Husain’s company Autocom has designed takes a rickshaw and adds a steel container that can take up to 200kg. This, then, operates through hydraulics with an independent power pack that uses a separate car battery, which doesn’t put any strain on the engine or fuel consumption. He adds that it is a simple system that can be operated by virtually anyone. (complete news)

Babar Iqbal Sets Another World Record
Babar Iqbal, a 14 year old whiz kid from Dera Ismail Khan, has set a world record by publishing his first research paper on digital forensic science. The field of Digital Forensic Science covers the recovery and investigation of data in digital devices and is often used to aid computer crime investigations.
Babar’s research pertains to Apple iDevices (iPad, iPhone, iPod) and has been accepted by the 8th IEEE International Conference on Innovations in Information Technology. He has been invited to present his research at the conference as well.
What sets his method apart is that it doesn’t require jailbreaking and can image an iDevice in less than 30 minutes. (complete news)

‘tipu sultan merkez’ earthen school in jar maulwi, pakistan by berlin-based architectural and engineering practice ziegert roswag seiler architekten ingenieure has received this year’s holcim award for sustainable construction within the asia-pacific region. the first level of of the two-story building is constructed with cob walls comprised of locally sourced clay, sand, straw, water and earth. resting upon brick foundations, the interior spaces are protected from moisture penetrating from the ground or rainwater. the upper floor is a bamboo framework filled with an earthen mixture.
the combined result of the structure absorbs humidity and the mass of the thick 60 centimeter bearing walls reduces the temperature of interior spaces by 8 degrees celsius during the 40 degree summer heat. local residents were able to build their new community facility by implementing appropriate construction technologies and skills which were already present within the village.

Pakistan’s first Communications Satellite PAKSAT-1R launched
ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s first Communications Satellite PAKSAT-1R, as a part of Pakistan’s Space Programme 2040, was launched on Thursday at 2117 hrs on board China’s Satellite Launch Vehicle from the Xichang Satellite Launch Centre.
Besides others, launch was witnessed by Secretary Defence Lt Gen Syed Athar Ali (R), Secretary Foreign Affairs, Salman Bashir, Director General, Strategic Plans Division Lt Gen Khalid Ahmed Kidwai (R) and Ambassador of Pakistan to China, Muhammad Masood Khan, said a press release issued here.

Lansdowne Bridge of Rohri, Pakistan.
A marvel of nineteenth century engineering, the ‘longest “rigid” girder bridge in the world’ at that time, was begun in 1887. Designed by Sir Alexander Meadows Rendel, the girder work weighing a massive 3,300 tons was erected by F.E. Robertson, and Hecquet.
It is one of it’s own kind and gives a glimpse of Sydney Harbor bridge.
