It has touched me in recent years how often I have witnessed the exploitation of farming communities by wealthy land owners as we have traveled the world. It is truly a universal norm to economically enslave share croppers by creating debt structures in the wake of drought or natural disaster, which in turn bind whole families to a land owner.
This man lives and works as a share cropper along the Indus River in Pakistan. I can still remember the hopelessness in his eyes as he explained how the land owner whose fields he tended had not changed his expected quota of grain following the massive floods of last summer, which has forced his children to quit school and work the fields themselves. Even with the extra hands they still can’t make the quota and are now bound to their master by debt.
FACT: This is a totally legal and recognized practice of slavery all across the world. (via aphotographicprotest)

I landed in Dubai towards the end of September 1975. That was the time when apart from construction workers, talented young men from Pakistan comprising bankers, insurers, engineers, doctors and other professionals were still migrating from the country in search of greener pastures. Banks and Life Insurance along with several heavy industries had earlier been nationalized by the Bhutto regime leaving behind a large group of talented professionals whose services would be welcome in any country in search of talented manpower, particularly the oil rich kingdom of the Middle East. The Arabs were indebted to Bhutto for teaching them to use their new found oil as a weapon against the West and to face the Western world with dignity and so they were more than happy to reciprocate by offering jobs to Pakistanis in their country. Students stand up for better wages of janitorial staff (In LUMS, a battle over fired janitorial staff brews)
A group of students from the Lahore University of Management and Sciences, with help from a few instructors, have been campaigning for the re-hiring of 16 members of the janitorial staff relieved of their duties on October 23, 2012.
The incident unfolded when the entire janitorial staff comprising of 101 people protested outside the campus demanding an increase in their minimum wages, as announced by the government in July 2012. Eventually students joined in support and began campaigning on campus. (complete news)

The Glorious days of PIA
Capt. Abdullah Baig and Capt. Taimur Baig: PIA pilots who flew airline’s brand new Boeing 720-040B (registration AP-AMG) on its record breaking delivery flight from London to Karachi on January 2, 1962. The flight was captained by Capt. Abdullah Baig. With representatives of FAI (Federation Aeronautique International) on board to monitor the official timings, AP-AMG completed the flight in 6 hours 43 minutes and 55 seconds, the record which to this day remains unbroken!! This achievement symbolized the fledgling Pakistani airline’s fighting spirit and urges.
Above photo was taken soon after the arrival of record breaking flight at Karachi Airport from London. In the photo you can see PIA’s ace pilot Captain Abdullah Baig (left) and his co-pilot Captain Taimur Baig (right). In those days PIA’s policy was to have 2 fully rated captains as pilot and co-pilot on jet flights.
Boeing 720-040B flown by another crew to London from where Captain Abdullah Baig took command and broke the existing world speed record. On the left side of this photo you can see Aizaz Moin’s father Captain Moinuddin Quraishi. Incidentally Capt. Taimur Baig was also Capt. Moinuddin Quraishi’s co-pilot when he suffered a heart attack at Tehran in 1961. Capt. Taimur took command and flew the Boeing 707-321 (registration N723PA) to Karachi. This Boeing 707 (registration N723PA) was on lease from Pan Am and it had made PIA the first Asian airline to fly jetliner. Capt. Moinuddin Quraishi was one of the very first Pakistani pilots to fly jetliners.

Corporate Affairs sector receives most job applications in Pakistan: Report
According to a survey by Rozee.pk, Corporate Affairs is a sector in Pakistan which is increasingly receiving more and more job applications, ProPakistani reported on Tuesday.
The survey, which was conducted by analysing job applications received from 2010 to 2012, also stated that Accounts and Finance, Procurement, Sales and Training and Development sectors are oversupplied with labour.
Rozee.pk analysed around 8.14 million job applications for the survey, which was intended to “enlighten all the prospective job-seekers to tap into the market gaps that are under-supplied and to inform prospective employers about the level of attractiveness the job’s functional area represents to the job-seeker”.
The survey states that the increase in job application to certain sectors may result due to either the decline in the jobs being posted within the right category or the attractiveness the job title entails to the job-seekers.
The sectors which have failed to attract applicants and have seen a consistent decline in applications include Project Management, Database Administrator, Systems Analyst and Human Resource. (source)
