“How can you not be inspired when you are walking every single day of your early life in the shadow of the greatest mountains on planet earth, be it Rakaposhi or Nanga Parbat?” says Nazir Sabir.
Sitting in a crowded lobby of a local hotel, it might seem hard to distinguish Sabir from average middle aged Pakistani men but what sets him apart from others is his resolve for climbing and the laurels he brought to the country in the niche sport of mountaineering.
From sharing camaraderie and climbing with one of the greatest climbers in the world, Reinhold Messner, to scaling the Everest, the path Sabir chose not only defied convention, but also proved to be an inspiration to many all over the world.
Born in a small hamlet called Ramanji in Chiporsun, upper Hunza, Sabir says he was fascinated by the stories about the ‘big mountains’ which porters from that area shared. (Complete article)

Amateur climbers scale Broad Peak
ISLAMABAD: Eight amateur mountaineers felt in the clouds when two members of their international expedition scaled their first 8,000-metre plus peak in the Karakoram range.
“Mountain climbing is a daring and challenging sport that makes all senses react,” said the team leader, Scott Mackenzie, on return from the 8,051 metre high Broad Peak. It took the expedition nearly six arduous weeks to conquer the twelfth highest peak in the world late in July.
Extreme weather conditions made the group have second thoughts at times but it continued to push up. “The weather got so bad that most expeditions to Broad Peak abandoned their ascent and left except one team,” Mackenzie noted, praising the courage of his team of young climbers ranging in ages between 24 and 27. Broad Peak (8051m)
Broad Peak is the 12th highest mountain in the world and is part of the Gasherbrum group in the Karakorum in Pakistan. Originally know as K3 it is known by some locally as Faichan KangriIn. In June 2011, a team of 6 Brits will set off to Pakistan to attempt to climb this peak. The team aim to summit, without guides, without porters and without oxygen. It will be the first time any of them have gone to 8000m and will be a big test of thier physical and mental strength. If they succeed they will be the 9th - 14th Brits to stand on the summit. Well my journey through Pakistan into China begins. I went into Pakistan with a very Western idea that it was highly dangerous and that avoiding it at all costs would be best. However yet again I was deceived by my own western ideals and media because what eventuated was a true adventure in every sense of the word. I think it wasnt just the media but every traveller/local I ever talked to tried to dissuade me from going with every excuse in the book. For my benefit I am lucky that I ignored all the warnings not just from individuals & the media but also government and UN advice; because if I had not visited Pakistan due to ‘security concerns’ I would have missed one of the most authentic, utterly beautiful experiences in my life. K2 is the second-highest mountain on Earth after Mount Everest. With a peak elevation of 8,611 metres (28,251 ft), K2 is part of the Karakoram Range, and is located on the border between Xinjiang, China, and Gilgit in Pakistan.
K2 is known as the Savage Mountain due to the difficulty of ascent and the 2nd highest fatality rate. For every four people who have reached the summit, one has died trying. Unlike Annapurna, the mountain with the highest fatality rate, K2 has never been climbed in winter.
The standard route of ascent, used far more than any other route, is the Abruzzi Spur located on the Pakistani side. An Italian expedition finally succeeded in ascending to the summit of K2 on July 31, 1954. The expedition was led by Ardito Desio and included a Pakistani member, Colonel Muhammad Ata-ullah. There is only one-third as much oxygen available to a climber on the summit of K2 as there is at sea level. Although the summit of Everest is at a higher altitude, K2 is a much more difficult and dangerous climb, due in part to its more inclement weather and comparatively greater height from base to peak. The mountain is believed by many to be the world’s most difficult and dangerous climb, hence its nickname “the Savage Mountain.”
